Stick-It together On your sticky note, answer the following questions individually: What is growth mindset? Why is growth mindset important in our classroom? When all members of your group have completed their answer, stick your notes on the Stick-It Together handout. Take turns reading your answers aloud to the group. Working together, take your individual responses and combine the best parts to form the best possible answer. Record your group answer in the middle box of the Stick-It Together handout.

Flip the tarp Record your group answer from Stick-It Together on the tarp. Place the tarp on the floor with your answer face down. All team members must stand on the tarp. Your objective is to “flip” the tarp over without anyone touching the ground.

Fixed or growth mindset card sort
Deal out all the cards among the members. Take turns reading and sorting the cards into two piles – Fixed Mindset and Growth Mindset. Ask for the answer key when your group thinks they have the right answers. Reflection: Summarize what was learned during this activity. Share your summary with a partner. Complete reflection.

What does growth mindset sound like?
Read each fixed mindset statement and record what a teacher or student could say that would be a growth mindset response. Complete reflection.

Reinforcing “Not yet” The word “yet” is valuable and should be used frequently in every classroom. Whenever students say they can’t do something or are not good at something, the teacher should add, “yet.” Whenever students say they don’t like a certain subject, the teacher should say, “yet.” This simple habit conveys the idea that ability and motivation are fluid. Reflection: What words or statements do I need to add to my teacher talk? What words or statements do I need to delete from my teacher talk? Complete reflection.

Growth mindset metaphors
Creating metaphors connects new learning to what you already know. Metaphors reinforce thinking skills and conceptual understanding. Think about the videos you watched. As a group, brainstorm a metaphor for a Growth Mindset. Record your metaphor on your guided notes. Record you metaphor on an index card to display in the hallway. A metaphor takes general characteristics of a specific topic and pairs it with a topic that appears to be quite different but has the same general characteristics. The comparison does not use “like” or “as.” Complete reflection.

Individually, create an original artwork to represent the answer to one or more of these questions: What is a growth mindset? What does a growth mindset look like? What are the benefits of a growth mindset? What kind of change is needed to go from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset? A title for the piece Description/explanation of your artwork written on the index card and taped to your artwork.

It’s not about students saying that you, as the educator, are a good teacher, it’s about each student saying and believing, “I AM A GOOD AND POWERFUL LEARNER.”
