Topic 1 = Systems Biosphere Biosphere = atmosphere + lithosphere + hydrosphere + ecosphere Use page from the blue book to write a definition of each of the above
2
Systems Consist of; Storages (of matter or energy)
Flows (inputs into the system and outputs from the system) Processes (which transfer or transform energy or matter) Feedback mechanisms that maintain stability and equilibrium.

4
Systems Task ; Complete the task in the to do box on page 72 in the blue book. (use page 2 in the green book to help you) Answer questions 1-3 on biosphere 2 on pg 73 in the blue book.
5
Systems Task ; Read pg and make notes to support 1.14 focusing on the second law of thermodynamics.

7
1.15 Explaining the nature of equilibrium
Equilibrium is the tendency of the system to return to an original state following disturbance.
8
1.15 Explaining the nature of equilibrium
Steady state equilibrium is a characteristic of open systems where there are continuous inputs and outputs of energy and matter, but the system remains in relativity constant stable state.- e.g. Climax community.
9
1.15 Explaining the nature of equilibrium
In a Static equilibrium there are no inputs or outputs of matter or energy and the no change in the system over time e.g. An object – chair. No natural systems are in static equilibrium. Draw graph time – system state pg 78-79
10
1.15 Explaining the nature of equilibrium
Stable equilibrium = when a system returns to the original equilibrium after a disturbance. Unstable equilibrium = when a system dopes not return to its original equilibrium but forms a new equilibrium. Draw graphs – pg 6 green book
11
Systems Task ; Give 2 examples of steady state and static equilibrium pg 78 Blue book.
