CHEMISTRY (chapter 1) Chemistry – the study of matter and the changes it undergoes; it explains the structure and properties of matter Matter – anything that has mass and volume Mass – the amount of matter in something Weight – the result of gravity’s pull on mass Remember…weight ≠ mass

More on properties… Physical properties include freezing, melting, volatility (ability to turn to a gas @ room temp), density Chemical properties alter the composition of matter (burning or rusting) –They occur during ALL chemical reactions

The Scientific Methods Question – Make sure it’s not a survey Research – Become an expert in your area Hypothesis – Make sure it explains “why” Experiment – Attempt to disprove you hypothesis Conclusion – Compile your data into a table, chart, or model

Variables Independent variable is plotted on the x-axis Dependent variable is plotted on the y-axis A control is needed to compare your results to
