Need for Education about Digital Preservation Without knowledge about digital preservation, industry will not create the necessary products essential for preservation, digital labs will not offer appropriate services for preservation, and consumers and collection managers will be left with a bucket of undifferentiated bits.

9 Things to Teach and Learn (1-5) Select what should be preserved. All media is ephemeral. Plan for format obsolescence. The expectations for quality will change over time. Look around now and then predict the future.

Things to Teach and Learn (6-9) Don’t forget the “M” word: metadata. Open vs. proprietary formats must be considered for digital preservation. Lossy compression actually degrades digital images. Specialized repositories are needed for preservation.
