3 The Enlightenment? There is no consensus as to the era’s beginning; however, most identify it with the publication of René Descartes' Discourse on Method (1637) ~ “I think, therefore I am.” The Enlightenment was a cultural movement of intellectuals in late 17th- and 18th-century Europe emphasizing reason and individualism rather than tradition and faith. Its purpose was to reform society and advance knowledge through the scientific method.
