2 Americans Migrate to the Cities Immigrants coming to U.S. didn’t have money to buy farms Lacked education for higher paying jobs Went to cities: worked long hours/little pay Rural Americans: moved to cities---better paying jobs Cities: running water, plumbing, entertainment

3 The New Urban Environment Engineers developed new housing and transportation Price of land increased: skyscrapers built Home Insurance Building in Chicago (1885)---first skyscraper-10 stories NYC: more skyscrapers than any other city in world Mass transit developed Cities installed cable cars Frank J. Sprague: developed electric trolley car (1887) NY build first subway system---deal w/ congestion

4 Separation by Class High society: choice of house to build Middle-class Gentility: doctors, lawyers, engineers, etc---moved away from central city (suburbs) Working class: majority of Americans--- residents lived in tenements –Families sent children to work in factories

5 Urban Problems Crime, violence, fire, disease, pollution Minor and major crimes increased Native-born Americans blamed immigrants for increase in crime Alcohol contributed to violent crimes Disease and pollution: improper sewage disposal contamination

6 Urban Politics New political system to deal w/ problems Political machine: cities grew faster than govt. Political machines and party bosses provided protection, food, heat, housing, etc George Plunkitt: Irish immigrant-NYC powerful party bosses---easy to get votes when people were given protection

7 Graft and Fraud Party bosses who ran political machines controlled city finances Grew rich as result of graft “honest graft”----buying land-selling it for more Fraud: party bosses accepted bribes from contractors

8 Tammany Hall Tammany Hall: NY political machine most famous machine William M. “Boss” Tweed: leader--- corruptions led to prison in 1874 Opponents of political machines: against corruption –Agreed w/ protection/services provided to city dwellers
