1 Eduprise, Inc. April 2001 Funding provided by the National Science Foundation DLI-Phase 2 NSF Award #0002935 A Digital Library of Reusable Science and Math Resources for Undergraduate Education A Sharable Digital Library for Educators

2 iLumina’s Vision The situation: e-learning will create a huge demand for high-quality digital course content Publishers will meet some of this demand through ebooks Instructors will still need informal digital modules to complement and tailor ebooks to specific courses The opportunity: The Internet now provides a scalable way to implement peer- centric sharing of informal digital content iLumina is a digital library that will realize this opportunity

9 Challenges Facing iLumina Making peer-centric libraries work: iLumina is not Napster  Provide access to resources by description (metadata) not just by title  Support multiple migration routes for resources, not just individual, grass-roots paths  Support peer creation and review of resources, not just peer usage Making IMS metadata work: keeping the costs low and the benefits high  Improve cataloging tools and community procedures  Demonstrate the value of metadata through effective tools and services

10 Challenges Facing iLumina (continued) Recruiting high-quality content into iLumina  Actively target individual materials and informal collections that are gaining a web reputation  Provide services they and other contributors need to lower their barriers to entry Achieving a critical mass—of resources and users  Consider tailoring iLumina access and interfaces for institutions or departments  Consider integrating iLumina with other e-learning services
