Welcome to our Good Friday Service of Hymns and Readings

Praise to the Holiest in the height, and in the depth be praise; in all His words most wonderful, most sure in all His ways!

O loving wisdom of our God! When all was sin and shame, a second Adam to the fight and to the rescue came.

O wisest love! that flesh and blood, which did in Adam fail, should strive afresh against the foe, should strive, and should prevail;

And that a higher gift than grace should flesh and blood refine: God's presence and His very self, and essence all-divine.

O generous love! That He, who smote in man for man the foe, the double agony in man for man should undergo.

And in the garden secretly, and on the cross on high, should teach His brethren, and inspire to suffer and to die.

Praise to the Holiest in the height, and in the depth be praise; in all His words most wonderful, most sure in all His ways! John Henry Newman (1801-1890), 1866 John Henry Newman (1801-1890), 1866 CCL No

Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Amen.

Jesus, stand among us In Thy risen power; Let this time of worship Be a hallowed hour.

Breathe the Holy Spirit Into every heart; Bid the fears and sorrows From each soul depart.

Thus with quickened footsteps We pursue our way, Watching for the dawning Of each eternal day. William Pennefather 1816-73 William Pennefather 1816-73 CCL No

O Sacred Head, once wounded, with grief and pain weighed down, how scornfully surrounded with thorns, Thine only crown! How pale Thou art with anguish, with sore abuse and scorn! How does that visage languish which once was bright as morn!

O Lord of life and glory, what bliss till now was Thine! I read the wondrous story, I joy to call Thee mine. Thy grief and Thy compassion were all for sinners gain, Mine, mine was the transgression, but Thine the only pain.

What language shall I borrow to praise Thee, heavenly friend, for this, Thy dying sorrow, Thy pity without end? Lord, make me Thine forever; nor let me faithless prove, O let me never, never abuse such dying love.

Be near me, Lord when dying; O show Thyself to me. And, for my succour flying, come, Lord, to set me free. These eyes, new faith receiving, from Jesus shall not move; for he who dies believing, dies safely through Thy love. 36 When I survey the Wondrous Cross On which the Prince of glory died, My richest gain I count but loss, And pour contempt on all my pride.

Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, Save in the death of Christ my God: All the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to His blood.

See from His head, His hands, His feet, Sorrow and love flow mingled down: Did e’er such love and sorrow meet, Or thorns compose so rich a crown?

Were the whole realm of Nature mine, That were an offering far too small; Love so amazing, so divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all! Isaac Watts CCL No

The day Thou gavest, Lord, is ended, The darkness falls at Thy behest; To Thee our morning hymns ascended, Thy praise shall sanctify our rest.

We thank Thee that Thy church, unsleeping, While earth rolls onward into light, Through all the world her watch is keeping, And rests not now by day or night.

As o’er each continent and island The dawn leads on another day, The voice of prayer is never silent, Nor dies the strain of praise away.

The sun that bids us rest is waking Our brethren ’neath the western sky, And hour by hour fresh lips are making Thy wondrous doings heard on high.

So be it, Lord; Thy throne shall never, Like earth’s proud empires, pass away: Thy kingdom stands, and grows forever, Till all Thy creatures own Thy sway. John Ellerton (1826-93) CCL No
