3
Why are there different types of greenhouses? Why do we need to know the different types of greenhouses? Why are there different materials used to frame greenhouses? Why are there different materials used to cover greenhouses? Why do we need to understand what a cold frame or a hotbed is? Reasons To Learn
4
What are some different styles of greenhouses? What are some factors to consider when choosing a greenhouse? What are some factors in choosing the framing material for a greenhouse? What is glazing? What is a cold frame? What is a hotbed? Questions To Answer
5
Lean-to Greenhouse Advantages Cheapest Easier Instillation More Obtainable Space Disadvantage Limit Sunlight Limited Plant Growth Difficult to maintain temp Limited Ventilation
6
Even Span Advantages Common Easy to find tables Easy to heat and ventilate Can add on to Disadvantages Expensive More space needed
7
Uneven Span Advantages Can be built on hill sides If constructed well can cut energy costs Disadvantages Difficult to find equipment for Difficult to add on to
8
Quonset Advantage Easier installation Low cost because of covering Disadvantage Appearance for home gardener Allows for only inexpensive cover
9
Gothic Arch Advantages Inexpensive Is good for shedding snow More attractive Disadvantages Less head room More difficult to build than Quonset
10
Ridge and Furrow Advantages Large capacity Lower energy cost Ability to diversify plants Disadvantages Area needed to build Cost of building

Get into your groups. Each group needs a poster board. Discuss with your group what type of greenhouse your group wants to design. Each group needs choose at least three plants from their lists. After you choose draw an exterior view of your greenhouse on one side of the poster board. The other side draw the floor plan of the greenhouse. Also draw out your tables on the floor plan. As a group write in a few paragraphs what choices you made and why. Greenhouse Project
12
Frame types Wood Good Attractive Traditional Bad Expensive Easily rotted Heavy Steel Good Strong Inexpensive compared to aluminum or alloys Can use galvanized Bad Very heavy Rusts
13
Frame Types cont. Aluminum Alloys Good Non corrosive Low maintenance Bad Expensive Lower retention of heat
14
Greenhouse Glazing Polyethylene Most common Cheapest form of cover Glass Best light transmission Most expensive Rigid structure sheets Expensive High impact resistant Weather resistant
15
Cold Frame vs. Hot Bed Both used to protect small plants and seed protected from the weather. Cold frame uses only sunlight for heat Hot bed uses other sources for heat as well as sunlight
16
Get into your groups and discuss what type of frame you need for greenhouse. Also decide what type of glazing that you are going to use. As a group write a couple of paragraphs about what choices that you made and why you made them. Greenhouse Project
