SATS Information Evening The KS2 SATs will take place between Monday 9th May and Thursday 12th May 2016.

The New SATs Tests 2016 The SATs have changed this year, to reflect the New National Curriculum. There is no equivalent of the Level 6 Test, although the new tests will have difficult questions to assess the ability of more able pupils. The children will complete tests in the following areas: Reading Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPAG) Maths

Reading Paper The reading test will be a single paper with questions based on passages of text. Children will have one hour, including reading time, to complete the test. Types of questions: Ranking/ordering, e.g. ‘Number the events below to show the order in which they happen in the story’ Labelling, e.g. ‘Label the text to show the title of the story’ Find and copy, e.g. ‘Find and copy one word that suggests what the weather is like in the story’ Short constructed response, e.g. ‘What does the bear eat?’ Open-ended response, e.g. ‘Look at the sentence that begins Once upon a time. How does the writer increase the tension throughout this paragraph? Explain fully, referring to the text in your answer.’

Science Not all children in Year 6 will take science SATs. However, a number of schools will be required to take part in science sampling: a test administered to a selected sample of children thought to be representative of the population as a whole. If Parkfield School is selected the tests will take place between Monday 6 to Friday 17 June. There will be three papers: Biology: 25 minutes, 22 marks Chemistry: 25 minutes, 22 marks Physics: 25 minutes, 22 marks Example Questions: Biology: ‘Describe the differences in the life cycle of an amphibian and a mammal’ Chemistry: ‘Group a list of materials according to whether they are solid, liquid or gas’ Physics: ‘Predict whether two magnets will attract or repel each other, based on where the poles are facing’

Marking the Papers The previous national curriculum levels have been scrapped, and instead children will be given then following… a raw score (number of raw marks awarded) a scaled score confirmation of whether or not they attained the national standard Please note, that this has not been confirmed, this is only a suggestion at the moment. As soon as we are clear about the scaled score, we will inform parents. Scaled Score Information - https://www.gov.uk/guidance/scaled-scores

Scaled Scores Scaled scores are used all over the world. They will place a child on a scale of achievement where 100 represents the ‘national standard’. The score of 100 is intended to reflect the same standard every year. For example, if a child received a scaled score of 120, they would have achieved above the national average
