What to do when you child asks for help with a problem:
Encourage them to:
1) Underline key words.
2) Read problems 3 to 4 times if you have to.
3) What are the expectations of the answer? Greater than? Less Than? Estimation?
4) DRAW PICTURES. Visualize!
5) Guess and check.
6) Chunk the problem.
7) Organize and label ALL calculations.
8) Ask themselves. IS this right beyond any doubt. Inverse operations. Completely reworking the problem.
9) Celebrate effort! Celebrate perseverance!
10) Model PATIENCE and a POSITIVE attitude. 
