Language Programs / Programmes de langues 15 The theme of this seminar is the complementary nature of language and cultural awareness. Language is culturally restrained behaviour. What can behavioural research tell us?
16
Language Programs / Programmes de langues 16 Summary Learning a language is learning a new set of behaviours – the behaviours of a speech community. The behaviours take place within the context of the community that shaped the language. This is an iterative process. Learning a language involves rewiring the brain and building complex new behaviours. The act of learning these behaviours is time- consuming, demands constant and incremental repetition, and is significantly enhanced by positive motivation. Teachers manage this process.
