The Next Generation Science Standards STAFFORD COUNTY MATH AND SCIENCE INSTITUTE AUGUST 14, 2014 JENNIFER MAGUIRE
2
Common Core o No science standards o Only includes Math and Language Arts
3
What are the NGSS? o K-12 standards based around concepts o Not specific to grade level or subject area
4
Purposes o Systematically organize science education Consistently build on and revise knowledge over the years o Make science education more engaging o Include more real science o Focus more on depth and less on breadth o Incorporate engineering and technology along with natural scineces o Integrate knowledge with skills and practices
5
A Mile Wide and an Inch Deep o “The framework is motivated in part by a growing national consensus around the need for greater coherence– that is, a sense of unity- in K-12 education. Too often, standards are long lists if detailed and disconnected facts, reinforcing the criticism that science curricula in the United States tend to be ‘a mile wide and an inch deep’. Not only is such an approach alienating to young people, but it can also leave them with just fragments of knowledge and little sense of the creative achievements of science, its inherent logic and consistency, and its universality. Moreover, that approach neglects the need for students to develop an understanding of the practices of science and engineering, which is as important to understanding science as knowledge of its content.” (Framework, 2012)
6
Three Major Dimensions o Scientific and engineering practices o Crosscutting concepts that unify the study of science and engineering through their common application across fields o Core ideas in four disciplinary areas Life Sciences Earth & Space Sciences Physical Sciences Engineering, Technology, & Science Applications
