Linear Sets Activity Presented by Anne Burmeister Michelle Plutchak Douglas Quaak Menominee Area Public Schools March 5, 2010
2
The Card Game Sets A Characteristics matching game – Find three cards with all the same or all different characteristics.
3
Linear Sets the activity Matching game played with linear graph cards. Each card contains the graph of a linear equation. Students are to determine the characteristics of the linear function (slope and x and y intercepts)
4
Linear Sets the activity Next student are to play the game in rounds by moving around the room and find another student that has a graph with the same or different characteristics. – Round 1 – Only one characteristic the same – Round 2 – No characteristic the same – Round 3 – Only the slope the same
5
Linear Sets the activity Same Slope
6
Linear Sets the activity Or Same y-intercept
7
Linear Sets the activity Or Same x-intercept
8
Linear Sets the activity No Characteristics Same
9
Linear Sets Activity Students must then record the equation and number of card they matched along with the characteristics which were the same or different. At the end of each round they must answer questions and describe from the graph how they can tell the characteristic is the same or different.
10
Linear Sets Activity The fourth round of the game is to find a match with an equation with at least two characteristics the same and record the results They then must record their conclusions and we hope they realize the if two characteristics are the same then all three are the same.
11
Linear Sets the activity All Characteristics The Same
12
The set of cards The set of cards consists of 16 equations Slopes are 2, 1, and ½ x and y intercepts are 1, and ±2
13
The set of cards Deck consists of 32 cards, 16 different linear functions If less than 32 students will be playing at one time then cards must be removed in pairs so that matches may still be found If an odd number of student are to play then the teacher must also play Cards removed will restrict the matches that can be made
15
Linear Sets Activity Extension – Have the students match equations with opposite intercepts – Have the students match lines that are perpendicular or parallel
