Submission doc.:IEEE 802.22-07/0257r3 May 2007 Kyutae Lim, GEDC, Georgia Tech Slide 1 MAC - Spectrum Sensing Interface IEEE P802.22 Wireless RANs Date: 2007-05-17 Authors: Notice: This document has been prepared to assist IEEE 802.22. It is offered as a basis for discussion and is not binding on the contributing individual(s) or organization(s). The material in this document is subject to change in form and content after further study. The contributor(s) reserve(s) the right to add, amend or withdraw material contained herein. Release: The contributor grants a free, irrevocable license to the IEEE to incorporate material contained in this contribution, and any modifications thereof, in the creation of an IEEE Standards publication; to copyright in the IEEE’s name any IEEE Standards publication even though it may include portions of this contribution; and at the IEEE’s sole discretion to permit others to reproduce in whole or in part the resulting IEEE Standards publication. The contributor also acknowledges and accepts that this contribution may be made public by IEEE 802.22. Patent Policy and Procedures: The contributor is familiar with the IEEE 802 Patent Policy and Procedures http://standards.ieee.org/guides/bylaws/sb-bylaws.pdf including the statement "IEEE standards may include the known use of patent(s), including patent applications, provided the IEEE receives assurance from the patent holder or applicant with respect to patents essential for compliance with both mandatory and optional portions of the standard." Early disclosure to the Working Group of patent information that might be relevant to the standard is essential to reduce the possibility for delays in the development process and increase the likelihood that the draft publication will be approved for publication. Please notify the Chairhttp://standards.ieee.org/guides/bylaws/sb-bylaws.pdf Carl R. StevensonCarl R. Stevenson as early as possible, in written or electronic form, if patented technology (or technology under patent application) might be incorporated into a draft standard being developed within the IEEE 802.22 Working Group. 2 Submission doc.:IEEE 802.22-07/0257r3 May 2007 Kyutae Lim, GEDC, Georgia Tech Slide 2 When do sensing? At the beginning In-band (at Quiet time) Out-of-band By request of SM From CPE and BS In idling (?) - by request of SM BS P2.Q1. WRAN CPE need to do sensing while in idling to support for distributed sensing? P2.Q2. Is there any other occasion to do sensing?

Submission doc.:IEEE 802.22-07/0257r3 May 2007 Kyutae Lim, GEDC, Georgia Tech Slide 3 Overall Sensing System Geo-location Database Spectrum Manager (BS) Sensing MAC SSF … BS #2 BS #1 P3.Q1. Are BSs share the sensing info? If then how? P3.Q3. Will Geo- database be only at BS (or in CPE too)? P3.Q4. Will Database be inside of SM-BS or not? P3.Q2. How (which channel?) sensing info will be exchanged? SSF Sensing MAC SM for CPE SSF Sensing MAC SM for CPE

Incumbent (type1) MAC Channel Set Database Spectrum Manager MAC P4.Q1. Channel set will be kept and managed in MAC based on SM? P4.Q2. What would be parameter for judging the quality of channel? (Signal power, SNR, Noise power, Noise Variance)

Submission doc.:IEEE 802.22-07/0257r3 May 2007 Kyutae Lim, GEDC, Georgia Tech Slide 5 What SM really does? Send me comment before conference call, Then we can add more at the conference call…

Submission doc.:IEEE 802.22-07/0257r3 May 2007 Kyutae Lim, GEDC, Georgia Tech Slide 6 Summary MAC manages the channel sets based on the information from “Spectrum Sensing” and “Geo-location.” For a channel that is specified by MAC for given time, SSF will provide the set of information : –Channel occupancy –Type of signal (Incumbents and WRAN) –Physical parameters (SNR, Signal power, Noise power, Standard deviation …) that can judge the quality of channel at Spectrum Manager The request MAC message is defined as “BLM-REP,” in section 6.8.22. The MAC text for defining the proposed MAC-Spectrum Sensing concept will be provided by July 2007 face-to-face meeting.
