List the elements of a welding symbol. Explain the meaning of a welding symbol. Identify the basic weld symbols used in welding symbols. Discuss other welding applications.
4
Welding Prints Welding prints combine elements of detail and assembly drawings within one print
5
Welding Defined Welding: Method of joining metal pieces by melting them along a joint Weld: The junction or joint where welded parts are joined
6
Welding Symbol
7
Weld Symbol The weld symbol attaches to the reference line of the welding symbol The American Welding Society
8
Weld Location Weld location is indicated by the relation of the weld symbol to the reference line
9
Weld Dimensions Dimensions of a weld can be specified above or below the reference line or in a general note
10
Groove Welds Groove weld specifications (A) Groove angle
(B) Root opening
11
Spot Weld Examples The spot weld symbol can be annotated in many ways
(A) Diameter specified (B) Strength specified (C) Spacing specified (weld through also) (D) Quantity specified
12
Supplementary Symbols
Contour symbol (A) Flat faced (B) Convex (C) Convex
13
Supplementary Symbols
Weld all around Field weld Melt through (A) Melt through plus reinforcement (B) Melt through and finished by machining
14
Other Applications Slot weld Plug weld Back or backing weld
Surfacing weld symbol
15
Other Applications Finish symbols indicate the method of finishing, not the surface texture C = chipping G = grinding M = machining R = rolling H = hammering
