Poetic Genres Epic Poetry: Recounts the life and times of a heroic or mythological figure Continuous & often quite lengthy Examples: Iliad – Homer (500+ pages) Aeneid – Virgil (9000+ lines long, or approximately 450+ pages)

Poetic Genres Narrative Poetry: Tells a story Much shorter than epic poetry The oldest type of poetry Examples of narrative poets: Geoffrey Chaucer The Canterbury Tales Dante Alighieri The Divine Comedy

Poetic Genres Dramatic Poetry: Drama written in verse to be spoken or sung Satirical Poetry: Punch of an insult delivered in verse Lyric Poetry: Does not attempt to tell a story Highly personal the writer discusses their own emotions, thoughts, state of mind

Poetic Genres Elegy: A mournful, melancholy poem, especially a lament for the dead or a funeral song Think of a Eulogy (story about someone who passed away) Prose Poetry: A hybrid that shows attributes of both poetry and prose Finis
