From Exploring the Titanic A Floating Layer Cake
2
How does society look at the different social classes? Lower class Middle class Upper class
3
Social Status Society views upper class people as more important than the lower classes. These often do not work hard for what they have. Middle class people have to work at what they have and most have average paying jobs. Lower class people are at the bottom of the socioeconomic ladder. They have very little and often very menial jobs. The lower classes usually envy the people in the class above them.
4
The Titanic’s Social Structure Lower class passengers were placed on the lower level. Middle class guests were placed in the middle. Upper class people were on the upper levels in very elegant accommodations. Barricades segregated each level of the ship.
5
The Titanic-A Floating Layer Cake Each layer of a cake is divided by a layer of icing. Each level of the Titanic was separated by a barricade. The barricades acted like icing-it kept the layers of social classes from mixing.
6
Social Prejudices Social prejudices are a constant reminder in society that people are different and differences are not often tolerated. These types of segregations sometime lead to disastrous outcomes. Society and history is full of these stories.
