13 Confucianism Changes Came back in 600s but influenced by Buddhism and Daoism (seeks harmony in nature and self) Han Dynasty was set of social ethics and political principals Tang and Song Dynasties blended Buddhism and Daoism concerned with human behavior and relationship with universe ◦ Morality highest goal to reach ◦ Morality achieved through education ◦ Education occur through books, observation, and interaction with others.

17 The Tang Dynasty Started in 618 A.D. and lasted for 300 years. Expanded borders, roads, and canals, bring country together and trade flourished Large empire so need officials to help run Government was like a pyramid. Emperor on top, adviser beneath, then bureaucracy (government divided into departments) New law code, listing all the laws so laws applied everywhere.

20 Scholar-Official Class If having officials help run the government, need to educate them. Then had to take a state exam that tested Confucianism, poetry and other subjects Test was long, difficult and most failed If passed, became a Scholar-Official (educated person with a government position) Eventually rose in power so much that pushed aside the noble families rank in society

21 Think, Pair, Share Read the question, think of the answer, share with your partner, then write down the classes answer. Do you think it is good that you had to take an exam (and a hard one) to work in the government? Should we do that now?

22 Scholar-Official Change At first, all came from upper class because had relatives in government and could afford the education and time to pass the test. In Song Dynasty, became merit system (people hired/promoted on talent and skills, not wealth) If passed higher exams and did job well, got promoted. This prevented corruption. Opened schools that poor could attend Ming Dynasty-couldn’t serve in home district, changed jobs every three years.

28 Song Dynasty After the Tang Dynasty and lasted from 960- 1279 A.D. Expanded and improved exam systems by having more schools, practical subjects More took and passed the exams Also had rapid technological, agriculture, and commercial developments

30 Technology Developments Built and expanded better roads and waterways that helped further unify China One waterway is the Grand Canal. Built in 600s and still in use today! 1,100 miles long and provided efficient way to move goods and people Gigantic ships powered by oars and sails, making voyages faster and safer

32 Commercial Developments Trade thrived because of the better roads and waterways Led to expansion in use of money coins to pay for goods instead of bartering. Coins were heavy so government began printing paper money (the first to do so) More became merchants and moved to the cities causing urbanization (moving from the country to the city) Some cities had 1,000,000 people! (Paris only had 150,000 at this time)

33 Agriculture Development 1000 A.D. planting new type of rice that ripened faster so farmers could raise 2-3 crops a year instead of 1. Food expanded and population grew to 100 million Chang Jiang Valley turned into rice paddies. Pumps and canals used to drain water from marshes and built terraces and irrigation systems. Grew more rice than people so extra sold to merchants who traded it. Extra food meant fewer farmers which led to labor specialization.

37 FINAL THOUGHT Compare/contrast the Roman Empire to the Mongolian Empire. Consider size and influence.

39 The Ming Dynasty 1368 A.D. Chinese rule was restored under the Ming Dynasty Confucianism and state exams brought back, rebuilt roads, canals, the Great Wall, lowered taxes. Enlarged the capital, Beijing One section, 30 foot high walls surrounded 800 buildings. Known as the Forbidden City because commoners and foreigners were not allowed.

42 Sea Voyages Emperor wanted tribute (payment from one ruler/government to another to ensure protection) so built fleet of ships. Seven sea voyages from 1405-1433, covered 100,000 miles, visited 30 countries in Southeast Asia, India, Arabia, and Africa Had 300 ships, 28,000 men, and gold, silver, silk, porcelain Brought back spices, gems, herbs, animals

45 Isolation Around mid 1400s, leaders debated continuing voyages. Confucians opposed the voyages because feared they would make China too commercial; they wanted it agricultural based. Others wanted the money to go to defense not exploration Argued China was most wealthy and advanced, didn’t need tribute, places had nothing to teach China. People came to China but China didn’t go to the people.

48 China’s Legacy You need you history books today Turn in progress reports in the Turn In Bin Bellwork for 12/4 Name as many things that you can that you know originated in China.

49 China’s Legacy Group Work Each group will be given a sheet of paper that has a Chinese invention Each person will be given a post-it note and be responsible for 1 of the following categories on the sheet. You will be given 5ish minutes to work on your category, writing the answer on the post-it. Be detailed and thorough. When done place post-it on sheet. When 10 minutes done, I will prompt the groups to rotate around, writing down the information for the group sheets to your table. (Don’t forget your own)
