Look around your home, school, and community, and you’ll see that you’re surrounded... by documents.

What do consumer documents do? to the very complicated. They provide information—from the fairly simple

Consumer documents cannot do their jobs if we do not do our job, which is reading them carefully. As consumers, we must: Know what kind of document we’re reading. Understand the purpose of the document. Evaluate any claims made in the document.

Consumer Documents When you buy something, you become a consumer of that product. Before and after your purchase, you should rely on various consumer documents for information.

An ADVERTISEMENT shows a consumer what is available, how much that product costs, and when and where that product is available.

A SCHEDULE indicates what time events will occur, what times services are available.

A LABEL is a list of contents or ingredients, care instructions, safety warnings.

A WARRANTY includes information about what the manufacturer agrees to repair (or not repair) after a purchase has been made.

A CONTRACT is a legal agreement related to a service. It is a document that explains what is expected of you as a consumer and what is expected of whomever is selling you a product or a service.

An INSTRUCTION MANUAL is a consumer document that provides directions for assembling and using a product.

It’s a good idea to read all consumer documents related to a product before you try to use it. Even better—find out as much information as you can before you buy the product.

Workplace Documents Are documents are those you will encounter at the place where you will work.

Workplace Documents Your first communication with an employer may be through a business letter. Or you may just have to fill out an application.

When you are hired, you may be asked to sign an employment contract...... A contract is a written document – a workplace document -- that makes clear what is expected of you as an employee and what you can expect in return.

Then, if someone finds the report interesting enough, he or she will track down the actual document and read it. Public Documents Most citizens do not read public documents. Instead, they read newspaper articles that report on the document.
