5 What about Spreadsheets? Spreadsheets have a few downfalls ▫Hard to find data in a large spreadsheet ▫Limited input options ▫Not the prettiest… Think of BCI needing to keep track of information for all students in a spreadsheet

6 What is a Database? Databases are designed to offer an organized mechanism for storing, managing and retrieving information A collection of information, usually, kept in a list, on a particular subject

7 What are Databases used for? To manipulate information so that it can be sorted and/or searched To make record keeping and tracking fast and efficient

8 Brainstorm With a partner, share your ideas about where you might find an example of a database in everyday life?

9 Examples of Databases Phonebook Facebook Mailing Lists School Records Medical records slowly moving to electronic database (your file goes with you everywhere!)

10 The Phonebook! Schmoe, Joe123 Fake Street Stoney Creek, ON905 555-1234 The entry is an example of a record. The last name, First Name, Street Address are all examples of a field. the phonebook is an example of a database.
