Second Grade Science Physical Science Standard Objective: Compare and contrast how different materials respond to change. Indicator 1. Model physical changes of various materials Indicator 2. Investigate and provide evidence that matter is not destroyed or created through changes
4
What is Matter ? Properties of Matter Solids Liquids Gas Physical Changes Chemical Changes Words to know Matter Rap Video Matching game Camera Assignment
6
Properties of Matter How It Looks (Shiny,Dull, Color, ) How It Feels (Hard, Soft, Rough, Smooth, etc.) How It Smells (Sweet, Sharp, Terrible, No Smell, etc.) How It Sounds (Loud, Soft, Echo, No Sound, etc.) What It Does (Bounce, Stretch, Tear, Break, etc )

Was it difficult to figure out what the pictures were ? The pictures are of something before or after it changed matter. Matter can make a physical or chemical change. We are going to investigate different materials and how they can be changed in different ways.
10
Solids A solid is matter that has a definite size and shape
11
Liquids A liquid takes the shape of any container
12
Gas Gas is matter that has no definite shape. Gases take the shape of whatever container they are in.
13
Chemical Changes in Matter New Matter is formed BurningRustingBaking
14
Tear Physical Change Changes in the way the matter looks, but not what the matter is GasLiquidMixture
15
Words you should know Demonstrate: To show Clearly Physical: Having real matter that exists Matter: Everything on earth Data: Facts about something that can be used Conclusion: The final decision reached Investigate: Study up close Mass: The amount of matter in something
16
Matching Game: Match the description to the correct heading I take the shape of the container I am in I am often invisible I can be changed by cutting, bending, breaking I can be poured My properties include color and texture I am the state of matter that is created when water is heated. I am the air you breathe Milk and water are examples of me A desk, a pencil, and a book are all examples of me Liquid Solid Gas
17
1.Take home a disposable digital camera from our classroom 2. Pick four items that will change matter 3.Take pictures of the four items before and after they change 4. Fill out the worksheet by making a prediction, how it will change, and a conclusion. 5. In class we will be printing your images and you will glue them to your worksheet.
