The Great Depression By: Rachel Vartanian

Dorothea Lange-background Born May 26, 1895 in Hoboken, New Jersey Lived during the Depression Era and took many photographs of unemployed men who wandered the streets. “Her photographs of migrant workers were often presented with captions featuring the words of the workers themselves” (http://www.biography.com/people/dorothea- lange-9372993).http://www.biography.com/people/dorothea- lange-9372993 Her photography consisted of portraits of displayed farmers during the Depression Era, and later influenced documentary photography.

3 Migrant Mother (March, 1936) Florence Owes Thompson and her family were traveling on U.S. Highway 101 toward Watsonville where they had hoped to find work in the fields of Pajaro Valley. 3

4 The farmers wanted full ownership of their new land, - people still wanted a chance to be able to live the American dream. Lang’s photograph of the bill board shot in 1937 advertised the good life in California where life for farmers was anything but the “American Dream” 4

5 Bob Lemmins (1936, Carrizo Springs) Photograph of Bob Lemmins at the age of 85. He arrived in Carrizo Springs with his master and others during the American Civil War. The only African-American in the group, and they were all looking for new ranges for their cattle.

6 This picture depicts an unemployed lumber worker and his wife en route to the 1939 bean harvest. They look healthy, but were probably most likely exploited as migrant laborers and paid a small amount of money.

7 This photo was taken in the early 1940’s near Weedpatch of 2 children in there wooden shack they called a home. The rent for a week was $2.75 plus electricity.

8 Grandma Walton (1940) Although her name is unknown, this picture captures the woman who was known as the real “Grandma Walton” She was 70 years old when this picture was taken; and instead of enjoying a retirement, she found herself as a migrant worker with her 68 year old brother and her sister around the age of 65 and her nephew at the age of 30.

9 This picture was captured in the year of 1940 and was taken in Maricopa County, Arizona, and shows a migrant cotton picker and her child. This picture has an affectionate side to it, by showing that hope comes through new life.

10 From Memphis, Tennessee to a plantation in Arkansas in the year of 1940 these young women looked forward to hot and hard work when the reached the cotton fields. They all look as if they have had enough of work before they even started.

11 This photo was taken in 1939 in the Minna Street area of San Francisco. As the Salvation Army did a semi-circle is formed so that the crowd positioned itself as a natural audience around them.

12 Dorothea Lange 1895-1965 Lange did not interpolate herself in any of her photographs. This photograph was captured in 1937 and shows her in the field with one of her own cameras...short dark hair and a feminine yet somehow boyish dress sense.

13 Personal Reflection I specifically chose this time period because I think learning about your countries history, will help make your decisions in the future. Learning about the Depression and what people went through when they had very little, makes people nowadays be thankful for what they have.
